Fundamental markers of good website design practice.
The Importance of Download Speed
Google uses download speed in its ranking system so faster websites get a higher ranking.
Visitors' fingers start to move over the mouse button after only 8 seconds. Don't assume your visitors have broadband. If your site takes 20 seconds to load, you lose 50% of your visitors. We design pages to download within 4 seconds.
A Short Website Content Tutorial
'Content is King' - a cliché, but the reason for the website. Razzle dazzle has a short shelf life. Visitors want to know:
- Am I in the right place and what can I do on this website?;
- Who you are and what you do;
- Where you are;
- How much it costs (maybe);
Keep the tone informal. Use 'we' and 'you', particularly if you are in the hospitality trade. If you are in a specialist area, think of including a glossary - don't use acronyms and jargon.
A typical business website has:
- Home page with a simple but comprehensive description of your products or services. The content has to be very carefully thought out for this page.
- About page with details about the business, where it is, length of operation.
- Products/Services pages.
- Latest News page with topical items.
- Contact page with form.
Appearance
'A picture tells a thousand words' - true. A poor picture tells visitors to expect a shoddy website. Irrelevant pictures slow the page down. Slow graphics tell visitors you don't care if they are on a dialup. A website design of vivid colours tells visitors that you have no idea how to construct a proper palette.
Navigation
Poor navigation even with a website of a few pages can confuse and frustrate visitors and they won't return.
We use pure, fast HTML that lets visitors know where they have been and where they have yet to go.
