The reserve (033 7021036) adjoins Himeville village in the Southern area of the Drakensberg. There are picnic areas and two dams that attract a variety of waterfowl and from which trout may be fished. The reserve offers hutted accommodation and facilities for school visits.
Himeville's history dates back to the time of gun running and cattle rustling. The town grew around a police outpost.
The Himeville Museum is located in a well preserved fort built in 1898 for the protection of Underberg. It was used as a prison until 1972. It exhibits an award winning display of the history of the area including militaria, ethnic arts, a real gaol cell, a Victorian school room, settler items, San art and a celebration of fly fishing (PO Box 207, Himeville, 34585, 033 7021184)10.00 - 12.00 weekdays.
The Himeville Hotel is a traditional country hostelry and features an English pub. The Sani Saunter passes through Himeville. Near Himeville is Kenmo Lake where visitors enjoy lovely autumn displays.
Although technically part of the Midlands, the village of Bulwer is the gateway to the Southern Drakenserg and has a quaint restored chapel built entirely of yellowwood. Near the village is Marutswa Forest and Ingelabantwane Forests that form part of the Bulwer Biosphere Reserve and where there is a number of pleasant walks.
Running along the 5kms between Underberg and Himeville is an avenue of plane trees that were planted to cement relations between the two communities.
