As with the rest of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban is administered from Pietermaritzburg, the provincial capital. However, there are moves that may result in the capital being moved to Ulundi, the traditional Zulu capital in Zululand. KwaZulu-Natal is the only province in South Africa to have its own monarchy. The provincial cabinet consists of a Premier and ten Ministers from the successful parties in the previous general election.
Locally, the Durban Metropolitan Council administers the Durban area. This area extends from Cato Ridge 50kms to the west, to Illovo 40kms to the South and to Tongaat, 40kms to the north (see map) - a total of 1300 sq.kms. The Durban Metro Council is responsible for the supply of electricity and water while there are six local councils that are responsible for such things as road maintenance and recreational and cultural facilities.
