The section responds to emergency incidents on a 24 hour basis with a response time varying between three and twelve minutes. Almost 300 professional full time fire fighters are employed out of eight fire stations.
The functions of the section are to fight fires, save lives and rescue people where necessary and to perform other duties i.e. hazardous substance spillage, structural collapses etc..
The division undertakes educational, survey, investigational and assessment programmes to make the general public aware of fire risks. It also provides advice and information on legislation governing the design of new buildings.
The education programme includes gas safety (bottled gas is widely used as an energy source), lectures to architecture students, advice during site inspections, school visits and community safety campaigns. It is also responsible for the enforcement of regulations.
The section is responsible for three areas: the internal training of the officers and men, the external training of commerce and industry and the regional training of fire fighter from other brigades.
