Assessing Web Sites

Our Web Primer

Forget the pretty pictures - can you find anything of interest, can you find it easily and when you get there, is the information relevant, concise and useful?

Appearance
Is there a consistent use of colours and fonts?
Are there less than three fonts used?
Is there a moderate use of colours?
Is the design appropriate for the intended audience?
Is the page layout clean and uncluttered?
Are the image edges smooth?
Are the graphics appropriate?
Are your eyes directed to the important page elements?
Is the text legible?
At 800x600 resolution, is there a need to scroll horizontally?
Is the contact information easily accessible?
Is the page short enough to avoid a lot of vertical scrolling?
Is the purpose of the site and each page immediately clear?
Structure and Navigation
Is the site content arranged logically?
Is the navigation consistently located at the same place?
Is the navigation recognizable as navigation?
Are drop-down/popup navigation elements indicated as such?
Are the links labelled clearly and their destination obvious?
Is the navigation understandable? Legible?
If graphics are used for navigation, is their purpose clear?
Can users get the information they require within three clicks?
Can the visitor easily backtrack to the site's upper levels?
Can you easily navigate between related pages?
Can you navigate easily between different sections of the site?
Search Engine Visibility (you may need an HTML editor)
Using expected keywords, is the site in the top 25 of Google?
If it is, is the site description useful?
Is the META 'Description' tag correctly completed?
Is the META 'Keywords' tag completed?
Is the 'Title' tag appropriate to the site?
Do useful keywords appear in the first page text?
Are 'alt' tags used in image links?
Are 'title' tags used in text links?
Is the site structure clear to search engines?
If using Frames, is there a noframes tag?
Is the HTML code bloated or slimmed down?


Page Content
Is the page content summarized at the beginning?
Can the content be digested within 30 seconds?
Does the content reflect the purpose of the site?
Is the content appropriate for the audience?
Does the content meet visitor needs and expectations?
Is the content free of grammatical errors?
Are short sentences, paragraphs and lists used?
Are there animations with no purpose?
Are the lines of text too long to be read?
Is the content correct and current?
Can specific content be found easily?
Is a search function available?
Usability
Is all the content visible when you print the page?
Do the main page elements download within 10 seconds?
Does the whole page download within 25 seconds?
Does the site have a splash (intro) page with no links?
Is there an option to skip Flash animation?
Is the site cross-browser and cross-platform compatible?
Are form fields arranged logically?
Are all site components (links, forms, scripts) functional?
Is information regarding any special plug-in easily identifiable?
Are the web skills required appropriate to the audience?
Is the site designed to be accessible to intended users?
