All web pages are skim-read initially so ensure that your headings are descriptive and not one-worders. Similarly, if you want links, again make them act like headings. The links to the other pages in your site should be easily found and explanatory.
Your Page Structure

- Use short words in a simple sentence structure.
- Keep paragraphs short.
- Put the main idea of the page first.
- Use the second person ("you") if possible.
- Use the active voice.
- Avoid jargon and slang.
- Avoid acronyms and abbreviations.
- Avoid idioms and clichés.
- Write dates fully: 3rd February 2003.
Do You Expect Customers who are Non-English Speaking?
If you do, short of translating your site into 10 different languages, make sure your content is understood by someone for whom English is not their first language.
Now that you have an idea of your site content style, get your ideas down on paper then trim them, reorganize them and proofread, proofread and proofread. A single typo can ruin an otherwise good site.
Go to competitors' web sites and critique them. Get ideas from them, save them and print them out. Include all the relevant good things in your site and leave out the dross.
The ultimate goal of your web site is traffic - visitors of whom, some may spend money with you. A very useful, if not essential part of your site is a resource area.
