Unless you're Coca Cola or BP, getting good search engine rankings is important because that is how most visitors will find you.
Optimization includes:
- Reorganization of the page content to include plenty of keywords relevant to that page. To a large extent, this is covered by Web Content Editing. Reference to the server logs of the site will reveal common keywords used by visitors.
- The addition of extra HTML code to the page body that reflects both the site and the subject matter of the page.
- The careful use of META tag content to aid search engine indexing of the page. However, some major search engines do not use META tags.
- Periodic monitoring of the site ranking in major search engines using common keyword combinations. Where necessary, the optimization is adjusted to increase the ranking.

Remember that at the end of the day, the site must be good quality and offer something useful otherwise it will be a struggle to maintain search engine position.
